Updated: Mar 16, 2023

  1. Access to information: Deaf women expect to have access to the same information as their hearing counterparts, but in a way that is accessible to them. This could include written materials with illustrations, videos with captions or sign language interpretation, or access to a sign language interpreter during appointments.

  2. Clear communication: Deaf women expect healthcare providers to communicate clearly with them, using methods such as written notes or sign language interpreters, so that they fully understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and care plan.

  3. Respectful and sensitive care: Deaf women expect healthcare providers to be respectful and sensitive to their unique needs and experiences, including their culture, communication preferences, and potential challenges they may face due to their deafness.

  4. Adequate accommodations: Deaf women expect to have access to accommodations such as sign language interpreters, visual aids, or other assistive technology, to ensure they have full access to care.

  5. Collaborative care: Deaf women expect to be involved in the decision-making process regarding their care, and to work collaboratively with their healthcare providers to develop a care plan that meets their needs and preferences.
